King MaddZart: SVG Reigning Calypso Monarch

SVG – St. Vincent and the Grenadines

How did you come up with your very unique calypso name?

I got it from Mozart and because of my liking for classical music.

What was the inspiration for your winning song?

I was in my garden looking at the typography of the land and said, “Hmm. Look at these contours.”

What is your real name?

Raéon Primus

Where were you born?

St. Vincent and the Grenadines

(You can read more about St. Vincent and The Grenadines here)

How were you introduced to calypso?

I grew up hearing calypso on radio and all around me.

Who inspired you in the art form?

Abijah is the calypsonian I admire the most for his skill at crafting satire.

Do you play any instruments or does anyone in your family?

I have a studio and I do minor productions using the keyboard. My dad was a drummer and vocalist and his brothers were vocalists and pan players.

When did you first enter the calypso arena?

I did it 3 times, 2009, 2015 and 2024.

How many years have you been singing calypso?

I am generally a soca artist and I dabble in calypso twice before now.

Did you ever sing in the Junior Calypso Competition?

Nope.

List some of your achievements.

First ever winner Ragga Soca Monarch – 2001
Soca Monarch – 2003
Ragga Soca Monarch – 2009
Road March –  2010
Calypso Monarch – 2024
Featured on the international hit song “Turn me on” with Kevin Lyttle.

What events have you performed for?

I’ve competed and won every adult competition in Carnival and performed at countless private events including my own events.

What countries have you performed in?

Multiple Caribbean islands.
USA
Canada
England
Germany

Is there any difference with how calypso competition or the calypso arena was years ago compared to now?

I have not been active enough to state much difference but I do know as of late the calypsonian is no longer singing 2 songs at the finals or semis.

What song you sang for this year’s competition?

My song this year is called “Contours”

Give us a breakdown of this song.

My song is basically about me me trying to write a calypso but having difficulty getting a good chorus because there’s a map in the room distracting me and making me focus on the shape of the land as shown on the map that demonstrates the hills and valleys using contour lines.

What advice do you have for young people who see you as a role model?

Listen to everything and find what works for you and your situation.

Any advice you want to give to any particular group,  feel free.

I will advise calypsonians to stop fussing about lack of airplay. I think familiarity with lyrics is not good for calypso. People need to be hit with that element of surprise.
